Online Library Orientation to P1 Students

Writer: Kaidan FENGKaidan FENG

Given that I am currently a primary school library assistant, my colleagues and I spent much time and effort on handling the students' book loan issue. The students, especially the first graders, don't know how to properly borrow and return the books, even after having several library orientation sessions. They either take the books out of the library, or put the loaned books back on the shelf, as if there is no circulation procedure needed. Therefore, the library staff are always looking for some lost books in a library with more than 60k books. After the LeaveHomeSafe instruction task, I start to wonder if creating a similar video to help the students to memorize the proper circulation procedure. Digital stuff are more likely to attract the students, they might pay more attention to the video than the library teachers. Second of all, due to Covid-19 epidemic, their access to the school library is limited due to anti-pandemic measures. They need a digital tool to recap/go through the circulation process when lessons are held on Zoom. Hopefully a video with buttons to click/choices to make may help them memorize the circulation procedure and save the library staff some time and effort in hunting for the lost book.
