The New literacies competencies developed though digital storytelling

An effective digital storytelling can only be created with new literacy competencies. When our group was making our digital story it was essential that we incorporate each literacy: information, media, visual, and digital. Then as we began researching and collecting information we noticed that information, media, and visual literacies can be scaffolded to improve digital literacy as a whole.

Beginning with information literacy, we located numerous information about food waste, then we evaluated which were relevant for our message and Hong Kong, and decided how to use it effectively. Which led us to media literacy, by analyzing and verifying the content for accuracy and incorporating a meaningful script with calming narration we were able to strengthen the credibility of our digital story. Following this we needed to complement the textual content with meaningful visuals about the importance of how food waste in HK affects us. We chose our impactful visual imagery to use in the opening based on the psychological theory of using dramatic images with single individuals, the idea being that people are more willing to help a single individual more than a group. As we build upon each of these literacies during our work process we were able advance the digital literacy principles in our digital story.

By using information, media, and visual literacy were able to apply direct and indirect ideas, such as wastefulness and environmental issue to form a comprehensive and interdependent digital story. Where the ideas work as a whole supplementing each other to create our personalize message of bringing awareness to food waste and social issues in Hong Kong, the breakdown of the food chain, its impact on our society and the planet.
