Session 2 reflection

In session 2 we explored the confluences of new literacies in the 21st century to create a digital poster. We chose to educate the elderly and their caregivers to use the Leave Home Safe App. Due to the current pandemic situation, the use of the Leave Home Safe App is a necessity but for the elderly it is a new challenge for them. Without the LHS app the elderly can not continue to enjoy their daily activities such as dim sum.

Through the literature we realized that we need to incorporate digital, information, media, and visual literacy in order to effectively educate our audience. The elderly need to be able to use technology in our current pandemic environment-digital literacy. Information literacy promotes problem solving & thinking skills with the elderly and leads to greater independence. For media literacy, the elderly need to understand the messages being presented to them by accessing, analysing, evaluating and engaging, such as hyperlinks to websites for downloading, clickable interactive instructional video, and QR code access. Lastly, visual literacy is important since visual elements are increasingly used in daily communication, the elderly need to be able to interpret images for better understanding hence the use of close-up spotlight images of functions and buttons of the LHS app for easier comprehension.

Through the exploration of different resources we learn that due changes in physiology of the elderly, their fine motor skills and vision are affected. Taking this in consideration we use a simple tapping motion in our instructions. In terms of vision, the use of color is important when designing for the elderly. Due to weakening in their eyes they see everything with a yellow tone which lowers contrast and they can not distinguish between some colors such as green and blue. Therefore we chose the color mauve which is popular with the elderly and enhances calming emotions in hopes they remain calm when they are learning how to use the LHS App.
