Session One-Meme

The stock photo was taken by Spanish photographer Antonio Guillem in 2015.

Originally titled, Disloyal man with his girlfriend looking at another girl.

First used as a meme in 2017.

For our activity in session 1, we had to research the history of a popular meme on the internet and then recreate a meme with a new message. As a group we chose the well-known ‘distracted boyfriend meme', where a guy with his girlfriend walks past a ‘new’ girl coming head-on, the guy turns back to look at the new girl with a “wow” expression on his face. We repurposed this meme to bring awareness of the message of HKU’s change from its current collaboration with Google Drive to a new partnership with One Drive. Many in the HKU community are unaware of the switch due to not being on campus because of the pandemic or not noticing the email. With this meme, the message can be spread to a much wider audience via social media.

In this activity, we focused on cognitive literacy, the ability to decode/comprehend meme. Information literacy, to find and evaluate the original meme and to reorganize and put the new meme to use. Visual literacy skills, the ability to comprehend images and logos.

Dear ShiZhi,

Thanks for your innovative remixed meme.

Your meme is highly related to our concerned topic recently.

In my eyes, meme is a good tool to draw people’s attention about a topic which is highly related to people’s daily life. You have done a good job to achieve this purpose.

As far as I know, HKU is going to change all Google Services from Google to Microsoft. This includes but not limited to: emails, shared drives, office applications, etc.

I see the focus of your meme goes to the shared drive only.

If so, I would suggest that the caption under Google Drive icon changes from Google to Google Drive.

Cheers,

Giny

Dear Giny,

Thank you for pointing that out.

We have made the necessary changes to improve the clarity of the meme.

Much appreciated.
